2) Research into Editing styles- Ms Georgiou -------------

Editing is the correction, condensing and modifying of  media. These things can include camera shots, timing of shots and things like jump cuts.

I am going to be looking at different editing styles within thriller films. The clip I am analysing is from the film the human centipede. The different editing styles and techniques are useful in creating the mood of a scene and can dictate a tempo and create tension and suspense.

At the beginning of the clip there's the use of a shot reverse shot. It is used when the two girls are tied to the bed. The shot puts emphasis on the panic in the girls faces. The shot immediately builds a relationship between the audience and the two girls as the audience will be wanting the girls to survive. It also shows us an insight into their emotions by showing us the fear on their faces.

There is a reaction shot also used when one of the girls eventually escapes from the bed. The camera turns to the evil man who has the girls captured. The facial expression of the man and the way he turns round shows us his obsession with keeping the girl captive. It shows the audience how sinister the man is and the evil look on his face will create fear amongst the audience.

The slow timing of shots is used when the girl is hiding and we see a slow timing of shot along the corridor. The effect of this is that it builds tension as the audience are waiting to see if the man is going to appear and therefore find her.

A jump cut is used when the man begins to bang on the door. This acts as the climax to the suspense which has been building throughout the clip. This is conventional to a thriller as they are usually jumpy.
