13) Planning Opening credits- Miss ----------

Credits are important because they acknowledge and give credit to those who had a part in the making of the film.

The credits of a film usually include;
- The production company
- The main actors/actresses
- Directors
- Music Producers
- Sound Producers
- Producer
- Editing
- Sound

Credits, and the style of the credits can give a clue to the style and genre of the film. This is evident in the credits for the film Se7en. In the film Se7en the credits are white on a black background. This contrast in colours may signify the conflicts between good and bad within the film. This is also foreshadowing that there will be a conflict between two people or two groups of people, which we know happens throughout the film, with the detectives and the murderer. The credits are jumpy and sketchy. This immediately creates an eerie atmosphere and creates tension with the audience. The credits show a number of pages being highlighted and crossed out throughout. This is use of hidden identity as the audience is not sure who the person is and why they are highlighting the pages. This also creates mystery amongst the audience.

The black swan opening credits also create mystery through hidden identity. The credits show a womans hand drawing in charcoal on a white piece of paper. Hidden identity is used as we as the viewer do not know who it is holding the charcoal. The mystery is further created as we do not know what the woman is drawing. The credits also build suspense as the music picks up pace and the womans hand begins to draw quicker and harder. The music is evidence of contripuntal sound as the classical music is not conventional to a thriller film.

8) Group Narrative and narrative theory - Ms Georgiou --------

There were three main theorist of Thriller films. These were called Vladimir Propp, Tzventan Todorov and Aristotle.

Vladimir Propp said that every narrative has a similar structure and that there are certain roles within narratives which are vital to making the narrative what it is. The characters which he thinks are necessary within narratives are  ;

  •  The hero
  • The villain
  • The donor
  • The dispatcher messenger
  • The false hero
  • The helper
  • The princess and her father

Propp would look at fairytales and break them up in order to prove his point.  A modern example which backs up Propps theory is the film Shrek.

  • The hero- Shrek
  • The villain- Lord Farquad
  • The donor- Fairy godmother
  • The false hero- Prince charming
  • The helper- Donkey
  • The princess and her father- Princess Fiona and her father.

Tzventan Todorov's theory was based on the idea of equilibrium. This is when the protagonist and antagonist have equal influences and power on the storyline of the narrative. He also included in his theory the idea of Disequilibrium. This is when the forces are unbalanced between the protagonist and antagonist. He believed that a narrative should follow the following set up.

  • Equilibrium ( Happy Start)
  • Disruption
  • Realization
  • Repairing (The Damage)
  • Equilibrium (Happiness Restored)

Aristotle is the final theory. He believed that each narrative storyline should have an aim or goal for the main character, with an antagonist and a protagonist with something at stake. He also believed in a narrative there should be a dramatic question with sympathy and empathy being created towards the main character from the audience.

In our own thriller clip we have used Aristotle's theory of narratives. We have our main character who is the protagonist with her life at stake. There is the spirit haunting her who is the antagonist. Empathy and sympathy are created for the character as the setting we have used is in a house which is relatable to an audience and would make them not want to be in her position.

We each sent our individual narrative ideas to the rest of the group and read through them. We then looked at the good and bad things we liked about each of our ideas. From this we managed to create a story line for our narrative, and begin to plan what we were going to do. We picked the location of a house as all of our individual ideas were set in a house. We then looked at the criteria for a level 4 clip and tried to plan what of those we could include.

Ravinders narrative was the first we looked at and was the following;

  1. Family(which consists of a father, 6 yr old son and a 15 yr old son) They are moving house to their grandfather's house which has been empty since 40 yrs. This is due to their mother's death 2 weeks ago. This is seen typical in thriller films as a film usually starts off in a good mood or it straight away starts with a sense of something bad.
  2.  There is usually history(a past story or myth) where the characters in the film move into a house - which is known for haunting  people who move into that particular house.
  3. The 6 yr old kid is being haunted by the antagonist - he is anonymous
  4. Background story - 80 yrs ago there lived a man called Mr Black - school teacher - he was bullied by students a lot as he had a mental disability, which resulted Mr Black becoming psycho - students were missing every month from the school. Once he was caught 7 years later he was hanged in 1970, and thereafter his house was haunted with evil spirits.
  5. The father and children don't believe in ghosts or spirits - they hear strange noises, however they always ignore it as they do not pay attention as they are always lost in their thoughts.
  6.  Until the day comes after 2 weeks, where the unknown Mr.Black has had enough of haunting and spying on these three as he receives no reaction. (The myth is that whoever is scared, frightened and fearful - the bad spirits will always haunt them - The antagonist cannot approach the fearless.
  7. After 2 weeks living in the house strange things start to happen - the 6 yr old kid starts becoming afraid of being alone and hearing strange noises. Also, imagining things - he tries to tell his father,  however he neglects him and think it's just because he's lost his mother. However, the 15 year old boy believes his younger brother and tells him not to worry or be afraid as God is on their side( he always wears a cross around his neck - telling his brother to but the 6 year old does not believe in anything as he believes God took away his mother)- due to innocence of the 6 year old he was first target. The boy starts to become afraid being alone - the antagonist can easily frightened the young kid and torture him.
  8. Randomly he starts to get knife marks on his body and day by day they get worse - Mr Black is opening up his insides whilst he's asleep  - during the night and the young boy does not realise until he gets up with sharp pains running through his entire body. He does tell anyone as he thought that his father is busy with work, so every night he got this until the fourth day he went to tell his brother but he just  collapsed before his eyes - losing excessive amounts of blood.
  9. The father takes him to the hospital, and realises that his 6 year old son has gone into coma. This resulted the young boy lying on his bed everyday - connected to machines - awaiting for him to regain conscious.
  10. Mr Blacks students who were trapped in that house forever, tried to warn the 15 year old by telling him the process of what Mr Black does every night and why. So during that night the 15 year old goes into his younger brother's room (fearless as he is aware of Mr Black visiting his brother's room and awaits standing in the corner hidden by the curtain - With the Cross Necklace around his necklace.
  11. 0:00am his father walks into the room with a kit in his hand. The remains silent however, when he witnesses his father stabbing and torturing his younger brother, he stands before him and starts to quarrel with his father. However, the 15 year old is not visible. he soon realises that his is possessed as he looked at his eyes and they were huge.
  12. The 15 year old goes to meet a priest and brings him home. As soon as the priest enters he feels a sense of negativity and evil vibes.
  13. The priest stays a night and prays in the house making sure that Mr Black who possess their father is out of this house and making sure the tortured escape from Mr Black.
  14. Once the prayer is done in the house for full 3 nights - the father is free and the 6 year old comes out of his coma and starts to bleed excessively.
  15. The story ends  that the father becomes back to normal but is still suffering from his wife's and now his 6 year old son's death(traumatised thinking he caused his son's death. The 15 year old is left alone looking after mentally disturbed further.

Thriller films which have inspired me are Insidious, The Sixth Sense, Dead Silence and further more. I have used the narrative of Insidious as it has inspired me of similarly copying the story-line. Throughout the scene low-key lighting would be used, also as the house is the grandfather's house - ancient and old iconography would be used.

We then looked at the advantages and disadvantages for Ravinders narrative.
Advantages: I have shown a detailed narrative, also there is a understanding of the location which is going to be seen as an unknown location. In typical thrillers, a location change is bound to happen where something evil will begin. The antagonist has also been acknowledged with a typical supernatural spirit.

Disadvantages: Throughout the narrative cinematography, mise-en-scene, soundtrack and editing need to be mentioned or mentioned in further detail, for the other group members to picture the narrative.
Next we looked at Lucy's narrative.

My narrative;
The scene starts as a long high angle shot focused on a house. It's night time and you cannot see the rest of the street. This is important as now my film will have a unknown location which makes the audience more naïve to the events that unfold as they are unaware of the surroundings. It shows lots of children arriving at the house and by zooming in through the door using a point of view shot the audience enter the house and see the setting for a little girls birthday party. This scene will put the audience on edge as through entering the house and seeing the fun, happy environment they understand that something is going to go terribly wrong as in a thriller film their is always a shock, surprise and suspense factor and so by opening the scene in a controversial setting it puts the audience on edge and makes the intrigued as it is not a familiar location. The party then begins to unfold before they children decide to play a game leading the mum to bring out a piñata. The little girl, who's birthday it is, goes first and gets a scarf tied around her eyes as a blindfold. As the blindfold goes on we see a last second look at the scene and focus on a bat in her hand which we assumed is going to be used as part of the game. As the blindfold is placed on her properly we return to a point of view shot as the whole screen goes dark just as how the little girl would have seen the room. Sound affects are then used to entice the audience as we hear the piñata get smashed and what is assumingly candy to fall out of the bottom. The little girl then cheers with delight and removes her blindfold. As the camera pans round the room we see all of her guests and family dead on the floor sprawled around the room. The little girl screams and goes to run out the house. Returning to the front of the house where the scene began we hear something drop. As the little girl slowly looks down a knife is shown on the floor and blood is all over the little girls hands. She scans them and realising she had involvement in the murders screams. The shot then zooms out on the house showing the little girl alone and screaming.

Like Ravinder's, we then looked at the advantages and disadvantages of Lucy's individual narrative.

Advantages: I have used a wide variety of camera angles to show lots of different view points on the screen. This allows the audience to see more of the events unfold and get a better understanding of the surroundings. I have also used cinematography in the form of a murder weapon. I have used the conventional method of a knife as it relates back to the thriller genre.

Disadvantages: Again through filming at a party which features so many people it would not be achievable for the group to film. I could have also used more detail in my narrative especially about the characters as without introducing the characters properly the group don't share a connection with the central characters and therefore the effect of the film will be lost on the audience.

My narrative was also analysed and was the following;

For my clip i have used inspiration from the Scream films and also the film Prom Night. Three boys come around the corner in slow motion with plastic bags in either hand. There is dramatic music playing. A long shot is used to show them walking down the road. Their is then a cut scene to a house party and a handheld camera angle is used for the first few seconds of this. The three boys then enter the party and a high angle shot shows them coming through the door. There is then quick timing of shots to pick up the pace and show the party advancing. The lights in the party then cut out and their is a reaction shot to show the fear of the people in the party. Hidden identity is then used as we see a masked character. Diegetic screaming is then used as the lights turn on and off. When the lights are turned on permanently there are numerous dead bodies on the floor.

The advantages: an unknown relatable location would make it scarier and more empathy would be created amongst the audience.

Disadvantages: Hard to film

After looking at the individual ideas and the conventions of thriller films we came up with the following plan for our Thriller clip.

Group narrative-

1.     A young girl around the age of 16 returns home.
2.     She enters the living room and switches on the TV. A news report on the BBC comes on speaking about recent suspicious activity happening in Chigwell.
3.     After this she goes into the kitchen and warms ‘something’ up. She places a timer on the microwave for one minute.
4.     She glances out the kitchen window and notices the light on in the shed outside. She goes outside to turn it off and as she goes to return to the house it turns back on. A slow back ground music begins to start.
5.     Scared she shouts ‘who’s there?’ at the shed.
6.     She runs back to the house and locks the back door. Whilst stepping backwards away from the door the audience can then hear her breathing heavy and a heartbeat. The camera is filming from the outside (ghost POV).
7.     The timer then goes off on the microwave making her jump and gasp. She looks at the microwave and the timer starts again by itself.
8.     She then slams the buttons on the microwave to make it stop but it doesn’t.
9.     The radio in the kitchen then turns on and begins to play ‘we’ve only just begun’ by the carpenters. This is off screen sound. However she then looks at the radio and the camera zooms in on it on the side. Time flashes to 00:00.
10.  As this happens everything in the kitchen begins to turn on- the taps, ice comes out from fridge, the kettle. The microwave timer then goes off again and resets itself to 30 seconds.
11.  She runs out the kitchen with a knife and all the doors slam. She then tries to open each one but they remain shut.
12.  The door from the kitchen opens slowly. There is a creaky noise. No music just the door opening.
13.  She holds the knife up, aimed towards the door and starts shouting ‘get out my house’ and ‘who are you’.
14.  She runs to the stairs with the camera following her she then gets dragged down them by her leg. The camera then films from the top of the stairs.
15.  She’s then filmed at the bottom of the stairs screaming. The camera looks down and see she’s stabbed herself in the fall.
16.  She removes the knife and begins to drag herself to one of the now open doors.
17.  Just as she reaches it the door slams and she falls back on the floor at the same time and whacks her head.
18.  It starts to zoom out showing her laying on the ground bleeding before jump cutting to an extreme close up of her eyes opening to end. Her eyes have changed colour to show she’s now possessed.

8) Planning Cinematography- Ms Miller ------------

In our opening we have tried to include a wide range of camera shots to create effect and build suspense. We wanted to be able to create different emotions through the audience with the use of different shots.  Camera shots are useful in doing this and they can also show us which characters are dominant and which are vulnerable. When the main character walks in the house we have planned to use a high angle shot looking down on them coming through the door. This immediately creates the suspense and makes it seem as though the main character is being watched. Once in the house we are going to use a close up on the TV button. This shot shows that the TV is significant and that it has some importance as this is where the news report reveals the news about the mysterious deaths across Essex. We have  then planned to use a long shot which will be filmed outside the house looking in. This will again make it seem as though the main character within the house is being watched. It will also be an example of hidden identity as the audience will not know who or what is watching the main character. When the knife is picked up by the character in the kitchen we are going to use a close up on it. The close up on the weapon could foreshadow that it will be used later on in the clip. This will help to build suspense just like in the opening scene for the film Halloween where there is a close up used to the same effect. When the main character hears a noise upstairs we are going to use a reaction shot to show his face after he has heard the noise. This will show the audience his fear and create more of a relationship between the audience and the character as they can see the anxiety on his face. When going upstairs to investigate the noise we used a low angle over the shoulder shot. This makes him look small compared to the upstairs and makes it look intimidating and sinister upstairs as though it is looking down at him. The shot then switches to a high angle shot from the top of the stairs which continues the effect of making it seem like the character is being watched by something.

9) Planning Mis-en-scene - Ms Georgiou -----------

Mis-en-scene is everything the audience sees on the screen. This includes sets, props, actors, costumes and lighting. Mis-en-scene also includes the positioning and movement of actors on stage including facial expressions.

Mis-en-scene has 5 different elements;
-Setting/Iconography
-Costume hair and makeup
-Facial expression/Body language
-Lighting and colour
-Positioning of characters

These are important within a thriller film because they can be used to build suspense and create different moods within the film. Low key lighting for example creates a dark atmosphere which can be used to create suspense. The setting and iconography can also be used to create suspense through unknown locations and eerie places like graveyards or deserted houses. The facial expressions and body language of characters can create empathy amongst the audience by showing the fear in there faces which makes the audience not want to be in that position. The body language can also show a lot about a antagonist like in reservoir dogs we see Michael Madsons character is mentally unstable as he cuts someone's ear off while dancing to the radio. The positioning of characters is important for showing which characters are more powerful, for

Mis-en-scene is everything the audience sees on the screen. This includes sets, props, actors, costumes and lighting. Mis-en-scene also includes the positioning and movement of actors on stage including facial expressions.

The set we used for our Thriller clip is within a regular house. We dressed Lucy in regular work clothes for the clip. We felt that by using the set of a normal house and a normal costume for Lucy that it made the clip more relatable to the audience. Films that we looked at like Halloween and paranormal activity also use the setting of a house and we felt that these are effective in building suspense effectively due to the fact they are in such a common setting.

The majority of the opening will be in low key lighting. We felt that by using low key lighting it would create a dark more eerie atmosphere and effectively build suspense with the audience. We saw low key lighting used in a number of thrillers like the purge. It made me as the audience wonder what was waiting in the dark and created more suspense and mystery.

We will be using a number of props for our Thriller clip including the items in the kitchen like the blender, the microwave, the toaster and the kettle. We are using the microwave to build suspense as the timer acts as a countdown before the suspense begins to build. The other items are used as a climax to the suspense  as once the microwave has stopped buzzing they all begin to go off. This will create fear with the audience and make them jump. This also happens in the film paranormal activity where all the cupboards in the kitchen suddenly open and the kitchen seems to come alive with all of the kitchen utilities turning on.

6) Group Storyboard- Ms Miller ---------------

The purpose of a group storyboard is to create a storyboard which contains parts of each of the groups individual storyboards, and by doing this create a final narrative and plan for filming our Thriller opening clip. The storyboard made us all clear of what we wanted to create by taking different elements from each of us so we could agree and be happy with our final piece.

As all of our individual storyboards included a house as the location we agreed that this would be the most suitable place to film. We felt that by using the relatable setting of a house we could build the suspense with more ease and make it more appealing to the audience. The unknown location helps to make the character seem more vulnerable and makes it more relatable for the audience as it is in the house setting.

We also all agreed on the female victim as we felt it was more conventional and made the victim seem more helpless. It also went with the feedback from the questionnaire when a lot of people said they would prefer to see a female as the victim rather than a male. There was also use of a female victim in films like Psycho and Scream.

When looking at the different camera shots to put in our storyboard we all agreed that a wide range of shots was needed. For example when Lucy came in the door there was a high angle shot making it seem like she was being watched.

The group storyboard helped us during our filming because it gave us a structure and helped us to save time as we could methodically work through it and use it as a plan. We each knew what scene had to be filmed next which made us as a group more efficient and quicker.

7) Planning Characters- Ms Miller ------------

When looking at planning our characters we first looked at the conventional characters from multiple Thriller films. Most of these films included female victims and the common theme was that they were all blonde. Our initial idea was to stick to these conventions and use Lucy for the main role as she is blonde and female. However after thinking about it as a group we decided that we would break the codes and conventions by using Reece for the role. By using a male which is more unconventional we made the film less predictable in the hope it would appeal more to an audience as it was something different to what they were used to. When looking at the antagonist we could not decide whether to use a physical creature or monster or go for a spirit or ghostly figure. After discussing it as a group we decided that by using a ghost there would be more things available for us to film. For example we took inspiration from paranormal activity with scenes like the slamming doors and the kitchen utilities turning on, which can be describes as ghostly behaviour. We also felt that if we had a physical antagonist that it may look a bit unprofessional with a mask and make up on and that with a ghost it would look effort without looking tacky or over the top.

10) Planning Editing Styles - Miss Georgiou ----------

Why is editing important within thriller film?

What editing styles will you include within your sequence and why? What effect will this create?

How are your editing styles conventional to at thriller film?

How will your editing appeal to your audience?

Editing is important within a thriller film because it helps create different atmospheres and moods during the film. It is used to link scenes together and dictate the tempo of a scene. Quick timing of shots can quicken the pace and create tension. Slower timing of shots can build suspense and enigma.

Within our sequence we will include both slow and quick timing of shots depending on the mood we wish to create. During the beginning of the scene when things begin to happen in the house we will use a slower timing of shot to create suspense and make the audience wonder what is happening. As Lucy is being chased through the house the timing of shots will quicken as the pace of the clip speeds up. We will be using straight cuts to move between the scenes as this is the most effective, quickest way to change between the scenes.

My editing styles are conventional to a thriller film because in films like Paranormal Activity there are long timing of shots when there is nothing happening throughout the house. This builds suspense as we, the audience are constantly waiting for something to happen. This is what we want to create in our thriller clip and then quicken the shots up during the chase scenes, when there is activity with the spirit in the house. The quicker timing of shots also can act as a climax to the suspense like the killing scene in psycho. Slow timing of shots was used as the killer approaches the shower, but a much quicker timing of shots was used when he was actually killing the woman inside the shower.

My editing will appeal to my audience because when watching a thriller film the audience expect things like suspense and enigma and tension to be created. This is what people want to see when watching a film like mine. So through the editing I have used the audience will find my movie appealing as it is conventional and expected from a film in the thriller genre.

5) Individual story board blog - Ms Miller ------------

The purpose of my individual storyboard is to show the ideas that I had for the opening of my Thriller clip. The other two members of my group also created individual storyboards so that when creating a group storyboard we could take ideas from each of us and use them to create our final piece. I used inspiration from the film paranormal activity to help make my storyboard, and used some of the things in the film like the empty house and the presence of a spirit. The  storyboard starts with the girl in her house alone before hearing noises upstairs. As she goes up all the doors around her slam, and when she goes to the top of the stairs she is pulled by hair, down the stairs where she dies. This is also an idea I took from paranormal activity with the pulling of the hair and the slamming of the doors as they act as a climax to the suspense and they are easy to film but effective. I used the ideas of an empty house as it makes the girl seem more vulnerable. Also the setting of the house is more relatable to the audience and people watching which makes it seem scarier, like it could happen to them.

6) Preliminary task- Miss Georgiou ----------

The task we were set was to film a conversation taking place between two people in a classroom. We showed the character entering the classroom, before having a conversation and then leaving again. It was a good opportunity for us as a group to get to grips with the equipment like the tripod and camera and experiment with different angles and find out the effects that each angle created. For our thriller opening we plan to use a high angle shot when the victim first comes in the house to make it seem as though he is being watched. Our preliminary task gave us an idea of how to use the high angle shot effectively and gave us experience with some other shot types we wish to include in our final piece like mid shots and panning shots.

4) Questionnaire pie chart analysis - Ms Miller ------------

Most of the people that we interviewed
as shown in the pie chart, were aged
between 15-17. This is because the target
audience for our opening is 15 to 17 year olds,
so by asking them we could get a better understanding
of what kind of things they like so we could base our opening
around that.
In this question we wanted to aim more for females
as in our opening the victim is a female. This mean females
will be more likely to empathise with the main character.
However we would have liked to have made it more of
a balance between males and females to give us a slightly
better ideas of what males want to see in thriller films.
In this question it was helpful that the majority of people said
they like the age group of characters to be teenagers because
in all of our individual narratives there were teenage characters
involved. It also confirmed that we will be using a teenage character
in our opening clip.
Throughout our opening clip we have planned lots of conventional
suspense building techniques and as the antagonist is a spirit we will
need to build the suspense in other ways as you can not see the thing
the main character will be battling with. This is why lots of people saying
that suspense is there favourite thing in a thriller helped us make our
decision. However only 8% of people said that a female victim was
there favourite thing about a thriller which does not support our idea
of having a female victim.

One of the inspirations for our opening is the film
paranormal activity. In the film there is a great deal
of silence used to create suspense, and the fact 30%
of people said that was most effective, helped us
make our decision to use a large amount of silence
to help create suspense.

40% of the people asked said that high pitched music
was there preference in a thriller film. I can use this
information in my thriller by using high pitched noises
as the majority of people said this was most effective.
It was important to my research as we wanted to find out
the different ways we could put the audience on edge.

57% of our target audience said that a deserted house is the
best setting for a thriller so we have decided to use that
setting for our thriller clip. I believe that a house is a very
relatable setting which increases the fear and empathy the
audience will feel towards the main characters.

The supernatural thriller is the kind of thriller clip
we have chosen to make. Our choice was backed up
by the majority of people saying that it was the best
type of thriller . I feel like the supernatural element
plays on peoples minds more and helps to create the
suspense and fear.
